CAMSPORT STAGES

Siblings Steven and Julie Hughes took their third successive victory at Trawsfynydd Ranges when they won the Camsport Rally last weekend, their 1600cc Escort finishing nine seconds ahead of the two-litre version of ANWCC Championship leaders Carwyn Ellis/Edgar Jones. Another Escort RS, that of Kevin Jones/John Davies, moved into third spot on the last stage when the Honda Civic of Geoff McQuilling/Iolo Jones suffered a puncture.

The twelve-stage event, in four laps of three, saw the Hughes' lead throughout although the slightest slip could have cost them victory. The 1600 class win went to Ken Pugh/Gwawr Hughes (Sunbeam) in fourth spot, the puncture costing McQuilling/Jones the class win but still finished second, with the Nova of John Rowlands/Gareth Williams finishing third.

Ellis/Jones took the two-litre award, Jones/Davies second and Richy Birch/Paul Jones netting third in their 205 GTi. In the Road Rally class the win went to Elwyn Morgan/Neil Thomas (Escort) just over a minute ahead of Alan Hayward/Tom Parker in a very smoky Astra GTE.

Pete O'Dougherty/Paul Griffiths finished eleventh overall to take the 1400cc class in their Astra, ahead of the Škoda Favorit of Paul Ellis/Sharon Davies.

CAMSPORT FORMULA 1000

The Formula 1000 Rally Challenge saw their biggest ever entry on the Camsport Stages with twenty-one of the cars starting, and fully entertaining the spectators as they fought over every second. The expected battle between celebrity driver Craig Middleton/Kirsty Riddick and Geoff Jones/Shelley Rogerson, was well and truly settled in Jones' favour, as he emerged the fastest F1000 driver, 16 th overall. He was, however, very closely matched by Challenge contenders Simon Povey/Simon Davies, the winning margin between the Micras being nine seconds. Third spot went to reigning champions Paul Bebe/Stuart Thomas (Polo) with third to eighth places separated by just eleven seconds!
