2002 WOODPECKER STAGES RALLY PREVIEW Rees and Hall in action

Following a very encouraging performance on the recent Quinton Stages Rally, Dorian Rees and Gareth Hall hope their problematic year is well and truly behind them when they contest the 2002 Woodpecker Stages Rally on Saturday 31st August.

Llanybydder rally driver is keen to set some more impressive stage times, after setting several top ten times, including one third fastest time in the Peugeot 106.

Rees will contest the rally, which is the next round of his British Trials and Rally Drivers Association Championship, Welsh Clubman campaign and also a counter towards the Welsh National series.

"We now know we can be very competitive when we run without a problem. Setting top-ten times on the Quinton was great, we were showing what we can do when things go right. The Woodpecker is going to be a similar competition field and hopefully we can be on the pace again."

Rees has again conducted some testing ahead of the rally

"We have done a fair amount of mileage in the car with just minor problems, although we will spend some more time in the car before the start of the rally it will also mean more time working on the car to get it ready for the rally."

The Woodpecker Rally, which is based in Ludlow Racecourse, will use the forestry complex of Radnor, with traditional stages of Hopton, Wigmore and Haye Park. Although the Welsh pair are not too familiar with the area, this has not dampened their enthusiasm for a respectable result.

"I have never contested in that area and Dorian has only done the rally once. Saying that, most rallies we do are new to us this year. So maybe thats why we go quick, we don't know where the hazzards are!" explained the Cerrig y Drudion co-driver, Hall.

QUINTON STAGES RALLY REVIEW Rees and Hall in action

Welsh rallying duo, Dorian Rees and Gareth Hall put their problematic year behind them when they contested the Quinton Stages Rally.

Based in Builth Wells, the bulk of the competition was held on Mynydd Epynt, using the forestry complexes of Crychan, Caeo and Halfway.

Llanybydder rally driver, Rees was in determined mood ahead of the rally start, knowing a class win in the Peugeot 106 rally car was needed to keep his British Trials and Rally Drivers Association Championship campaign alive.

The rally was also a round of both the Welsh Clubman and the Peugeot 206 series, with Rees eager to show he has the ability to be a front runner in the one make series.

"It will be interesting to see how our times compare to the 206's, but I don't intend to risk our championship to keep with them." said Rees before the early morning start.

After nine miles of competitive motoring, Rees and Hall arrived at first service feeling dejected following a minor problem on the second special timed stage of the day.

"We caught a car in the stage, he had a puncture and slowed us by 10 or 15 seconds. It has also cracked the windscreen." said Rees' Cerrig y Drudion co-driver, Hall.

The Welsh team had little trouble after that and the little Peugeot set some very impressive stage times with three out of the eight times inside the top ten overall. One of these being a third place, a great achievement with far more powerful four wheel drive, turbo-charged machinery.

Dorian and Gareth returned to the Builth Wells finish in a fine 12th overall, second in the very competitive A6 class for 1600cc cars and first Peugeot.

"I am very happy with the way things have turned out today, we knew we could keep with the 206's, despite having less power we have the pace. We are still in a good position in our championship campaigns, leading the overall Clubman series. I hope our luck has finally changed and we can show our true potential on other rallies for the remaining year."

The Welsh pair now have a short break before their next rally, the Woodpecker Rally on Saturday 31st August, but Rees aims to conduct some testing prior to the next round.

"I feel very relaxed with the car and know it is good now, but I just want to try some things out with it to see if we can go even faster."

SWANSEA BAY NATIONAL RALLY REVIEW Rees and Hall in action

Despite a last stage suspension problem, Dorian Rees was more than pleased with the performance of the Peugeot 106 and co-driver Gareth Hall.

Llanybydder rally driver, Rees had intended use the Swansea Bay National Rally to conduct some tests during the day to see if the little Peugeot was performing to its maximum potential. Along with collecting some valuable points for the ANCRO and Welsh National Championships.

The West Wales driver, along with his Cerrig y Drudion co-driver, did not have much time to monitor their performance after only a few miles into stage one, the gear lever came adrift, leaving Rees to hold the lever in place at for the remainder of the stage.

"It certainly makes things interesting, driving one handed and trying to keep up the speed."

Despite the gear problem Rees was still able to hold onto second in class. Stage two and with the problem resolved, Rees and Hall set about reducing the deficit in fine style, coming out of the stage just five seconds off the class leader.

"The car works well when we have no problem, you can feel the extra power and know we can set good times." The pair suffered a puncture that dropped them to 4th in class on stage three, losing them over four minutes. The pair then returned to fine form on stage four and getting to within 25 seconds of third place.

Stage five resulted in the front suspension collapsing, a problem that may have been caused by the puncture earlier on in the day.

"We set a target to compare the performance of the car throughout the day, but we were only able to test this on the two clear stages. The results are very promising. Gareth read the maps brilliantly all day and we were a true combination on stage two and four with the times showing we are very competitive."

The Welsh rally duo now look forward to the Quinton Stages Rally on Saturday 27th July in Builth Wells, Mid Wales. The rally will count towards their British Trials and Rally Drivers Association and Welsh Clubman campaigns.

"We know we can compete against all the challengers in our class. Also feel we will be among the top three given a problem free day."

The Quinton Stages Rally is also a round of the Peugeot 206 championship, with Rees having more of a reason to show his true speed and determination during the event.

SWANSEA BAY NATIONAL RALLY PREVIEW Rees and Hall in action

Llanybydder rally driver, Dorian Rees will have yet another busy week ahead after he contests the Swansea Bay National Rally on Saturday 20th July. Rees has contested no less than five times this year, where he has had little over a week to re-prepair the Peugeot 106 rally car before his next competition.

The West Wales driver maintains his own rally car and along with working long hours during the day, he then spends many late evenings preparing the car for the next event.

"It keeps me busy, working on the farm and keeping the car well prepared. It's part of the fun of rallying." explains Rees.

The rapid Welshman will contest the Swansea Bay Rally having made dramatic changes to his Peugeot Rally car.

Following the Dukeries Rally, when his engine expired, Rees had little time to re-fit a new engine and maximise the potential of the unit before contesting the ATS Coracle Stages just seven days later. Now with more time available leading to the Swansea Bay Rally, Rees has made full use it and aims to show what he has acheived over the next two rallies.

"We have found extra power with the new engine. We ran it on the Coracle in standard form. Now we have an extra 25BHP, so it should work in our favour. I felt the car was not as good with the new engine and now with the extra boost we will see what we can do."

The young Welsh Farmer will again be partnered by Cerrig y Drudion co-driver, Gareth Hall, and are under no illusion of their task on the ANCRO and Welsh National counter.

"We have set a target to compare the performance of the car, but also feel we can take maximum class points for both championship campaigns."

The Welsh rally duo have contested nine rallies so far this season. Of every finish achieved, the pair have never been outside the top five of their class, and with just one mechanical retirement Rees is very pleased with the all round performance.

"We have always been in contention for the class lead and aim to stay contenders for the remainder of the season. Our service team are very good and help me prepare the car through the week along with attending rallies. It is a good team effort."

Seven days after the ANCRO round, Rees and Hall will contest The Quinton Stages Rally in Mid Wales on 27th July, as part of their British Trials and Rally Drivers Association and Welsh Clubman Championships.

The Swansea Bay National Rally will start from the Maritime Quarter of the City, with the five long and demanding timed special stages taking place in the Vale of Neath before returning to the finish back in Swansea.

ATS CORACLE STAGES RALLY REVIEW Rees and Hall in action

Dorian Rees was more determined than ever to bury his recent run of bad luck ahead of this weekend's Welsh Clubman Rally Championship counter, the ATS Coracle Stages at the Sweet Lamb forestry complex.

The Llanybydder rally driver suffered radiator failure on his Peugeot 106, which resulted in a broken engine the previous week during the Dukeries Rally and with full intention of contesting the Coracle just seven days later, Rees spent many long hours on his rally car in preparation for the rally.

"It has been a long week, working on the farm and the car has been hard. I have started work later in the day and worked late into the night on the car." explained the young Welsh Farmer.

Along with his Cerrig y Drudion co-driver, Gareth Hall, Rees made the start of the rally in the little white Peugeot 106 and the extra work and effort proved worthwhile as the Welsh pair defended their overall lead in the Welsh Clubman Championship.

The fast, but dusty terrain of the Sweet Lamb Complex suited the Peugeot and Rees and Hall made just routine service stops throughout the day. Late afternoon brought some wet weather. Although the rally pairing were satisfied with their performance and were rewarded with second in the 1600cc class and overall finished in fifteenth place.

"We are in a good position now, the result today still means we are top of the class and the overall standings. It is very good for us to be in this position at the halfway point in the series and we aim to stay there."

The pair have a three week break until their next rally. That event will be the Swansea Bay Rally on Saturday 20th July, part of both ANCRO and Welsh National Championship's.

The next Welsh Clubman event is the Quinton Stages the following week on Saturday 17th July.

NORTH WEST STAGES 17/02/01

BARRY GRANT/ GARETH HALL - CAR No 27- 2O5Gti

This was our first event of the 2001 ANWCC season, Barry had just got the car back after it's West Midlands Safari park inversion!

The event was based at the Novotel in Preston, with 4 venues being used - Leyland test track, Weeton army camp, Burscough airfield and a Water Board sewage treatment plant. The car got through scrutineering on the Friday night Ok, even with the paintwork still tacky! The start on Saturday bought with it a frosty morning - sure to be slippery somewhere we thought, and the driver wondered whether the event was a good idea just after a big repair bill.

The first loop of stages went ok, but for the odd moment due to dodgy brakes. Barry had been tipped off that there was a tricky chicane, along the big straight at Burscough - yes it was tricky and yes we did hit it; first bit of panel damage for the day.

By the last loop of stages we were up to about 20th and 4th in class, this probably wasn't a bad result looking at some of the cars in front of us. It went wrong however on the last loop around Leyland - we got caught out on standing water on a slight kink and hit a concrete marker; front wheel pushed back and end of Rally.... gutted after getting so close to a finish. Great start to the year 4 starts 4 retirements !

Good event to do though, a lot of stages, but a lot of road mileage also.

WEST MIDLANDS SAFARI PARK STAGES 21/01/01

BARRY GRANT/GARETH HALL CAR No14 - 2O5Gti
ANDREW GRANT/GARETH HALL CAR No 31 - 2O5Gti

This event allowed 2 drivers to share the same car, so I got 2 runs for the price of one. The Rally was a "Practice Day" held around the Zoo's car park, times were recorded and overall placing given as with a normal stage event. The event was also "closed to club" (would something like this work on the Ranges?)

It had snowed heavily overnight; the service area was on a steep hill and watching vans and trailers coming down the hill locked up and side ways, provided a lot of entertainment. Much to our relief the car club had talked the local gritter into going around the rally track, in exchange for a bundle of cash. Barry and Andrew had entered simply to have a laugh, and a play with the car to try out the diff and gearbox which had just been re-built.

The first couple of loops were a bit slippery, just throw it in on the handbrake and hope for the best. We got through about three-quarters of the day with no problems apart from the odd spin - Barry was about ninth and Andrew about fourteenth, It all went wrong on the seventh stage, the back end of the car went light on a kink over a crest, which meant that Barry had to correct the car on a right hand junction - just as it looked that we had got away with it we clipped some tyres, and over we went onto our roof.

The car wasn't that badly damaged, and we were disappointed that we weren't allowed to finish the stage, At least it was caught on video!

Ford Racing KA Rally Championship 2000

Jane Edgington is First Lady

In her first event in a Ford Racing KA Rally Car, Jane Edgington (Corwen) overcame a bout of flu and a recurring gear linkage problem to comfortably finish First Lady in the first round of the Ford Racing KA Rally Championship 2000 on the recent Malcolm Wilson Rally.

Jane, co-driven by Matthew Picton (Northampton), led the category from start to finish despite never having competed in a left-hand drive car before. Said Jane, "The early stages were very rough and slippery causing damage to the underneath of the car which made changing gear very difficult, but as the event went on, I got more used to the car and my new co-driver, and started to enjoy myself. I was thrilled with the win."

Jane leads the Ladies Championship going into the next round, the Tour of Epynt on April 2 nd , and would welcome additional sponsorship to help her continue in her bid to become the Ford Racing KA Rally Championship 2000 Ladies Champion.

Interested companies, suppliers or individuals should call Matthew Picton on 07068 399012 for details.

Ford Racing KA Rally Championship 2000

Jane Denied Second Successive Victory

Jane Edgington (Corwen) finished the Tour of Epynt at the weekend with fastest stage times of the lady competitors in the Ford Racing KA Rally Championship only to find herself denied a second successive victory in the category by a 1 minute road penalty.

The day began slowly for Jane, who found that her complete lack of tarmac testing meant that she was driving well within the capabilities of the KA. Her confidence was not helped by the changeable, but mostly wet, conditions and the fact that the back end of the car was very unstable over the many infamous Epynt jumps.

By the halfway point Jane found herself 45 seconds behind the class leader, but changes to the rear suspension and a gamble on intermediate tyres gave her renewed confidence. She then set about regaining the lost time and by the final service of the day had managed to claw back all but 9 seconds. Then with just two stages remaining, the weather took a turn for the worst making the stages very wet and slippery, forcing a change back to full wet tyres. Another 2 seconds were taken off the leader on the two-mile stage 17 which heralded a big push through the final 12-mile stage. She emerged with a big smile on her face, "I’ve never driven that fast on tarmac in my life", said Jane. This was confirmed with the time – a staggering 18sec faster than the rally-long leader in the ladies category was to give her an 11sec margin of victory.

However, she would be cruelly robbed of her well deserved win in the ladies championship, when it emerged that she had picked up a 1 minute road penalty earlier in the day. Jane said afterwards, "Although I’m gutted not to get the win, I know that I was fastest where it matters – on the stages!"

The next round of the Ford Racing KA Rally Championship 2000 is the Plains Rally on May 6 th , and Jane would welcome additional sponsorship to help her continue in her bid to become Ford Racing KA Rally Championship 2000 Ladies Champion.

Ford Racing KA Rally Championship 2000

Jane Wins Plains Thriller

Jane Edgington (Corwen) was First Lady in the hotly contested Ford Racing KA Rally Championship 2000 on the four stage Plains Rally this weekend after a nail-biting final stage showdown. With two wins under her belt, Jane already looks favourite to become the Ford Racing KA Rally Championship 2000 Ladies Champion.

Jane, who works for Llandrillo College and is backed by R.G. Bacon & Shropshire Rallyschool, began the day with a slow first stage time which highlighted the fact that she hadn't driven the Ka on gravel for over 2 months. Twelve seconds were lost to experienced Ka Championship runner Clare Morran on that Panterthog stage with a further second lost on stage 2, Dyfnant.

The half-way service halt came at a good time for Jane as it gave her time to gather her thoughts and decide that there was only one way to proceed – with "Maximum attack!". And attack she did, taking back seven seconds from the class leader in the third stage, Dyfi, to leave her just six seconds adrift with one 12 mile stage to go. Running directly behind Clare, Jane who had nothing to lose gave her all on the Gartheiniog stage. By the halfway point she had to drop her pace because she had caught Clare's dust and the lack of visibility was very dangerous on the fast straights. It was difficult to tell how much time had been lost, but her co-driver, Matthew Picton (Northampton) was of the opinion that if they had caught her dust, they must have been quicker. However, nothing could prepare them for the shock when they entered the final time control and found that not only had they set a faster time – they were a staggering 39 seconds faster!

"We both started badly this morning, but after service we really got it together and that final stage was the best I've ever seen Jane drive", said co-driver Matt afterwards.

The next round of the is the Kerridge National Rally on June 17 th , and Jane would welcome additional sponsorship to help her continue in her bid to become Ford Racing KA Rally Championship 2000 Ladies Champion.

Interested companies, suppliers or individuals should call Matthew Picton on 07968 399012 for details.

Ford Racing KA Rally Championship 2000

Win Number Three For Edgington on Kerridge

Jane Edgington (Corwen) once again proved she is the pick of the ladies in the Ford Racing KA Rally Championship with a dominant win on Saturday's Kerridge National Rally. Run in searing heat over some classic Welsh stages, the Ford Ka once again ran faultlessly, a tribute to the excellent preparation by Shropshire Rallyschool,   www.rallyschool.co.uk

Jane, who works for Llandrillo College and is backed by R.G. Bacon, caught the other ladies napping in the morning with a time through SS1, Tywi, some 34 seconds up on the second placed lady, Clare Morran. By the time the crews arrived at first service in Llandovery Jane and her co-driver Matthew Picton had already built up a 1min lead. Some more time was taken through the next couple of stages, Crychan and Caeo, before the first pair of runs around the Royal Welsh Showground in Builth Wells. To set times sixth and eighth fastest in class were slightly surprising considering that Jane confessed to just be "having a laugh".

With the second loop of stages through Tywi, Dalarwen and Crychan, came a more cautions approach by the crew with the fear of punctures from the deteriorating surface. However, they still managed to top the ladies times on all but one stage.

The day was finished off with another pair of stages around the Showground, but they were instructed to take it easy by their service crew when some damage to the steering rack was found. However they finished the day on a high with another couple of good times. Such was the winning margin that a 1 min road penalty picked up by a careless co-driver, who had claimed to have done it "just to make things a bit more interesting!", would still leave Jane as First Lady by some 26 seconds.

The next round of the is the Enterprise Printing Rally on July 22 nd , and Jane would welcome additional sponsorship to help her continue in her bid to become Ford Racing KA Rally Championship 2000 Ladies Champion.

Interested companies, suppliers or individuals should call Matthew Picton on 07968 399012 for details.
